Rocks
Updated 03/04/2011

The universe is full of rocks. Rocks of all kinds and sizes clump together to form planets. Rocks can be found strewn across the surface and under the sea of every planet and moon.

Rocks can be foraged from the environment. To forage the natural resource present at a rock, simply switch to UI (hand) input mode and click at the center of the rock. UI mode is accessed while holding down the Ctrl key or by right-clicking the mouse.

Rocks represent the presense of resources in significant quantity. Most rock resources are acquired through mining. Some resources are pumped from under ground by wells; the rocks simply reveal their presence. The quality of each rock-borne natural resource commodity is the same throughout each resource zone of a planet. The quality of commodities produced by mines and wells does not vary within a resource zone.

A planet is divided into three resource zones, like an orange divided into three equal slices. Resource quality and abundance varies by zone. The only visible change from one zone to the next is the appearance of the plant life. Otherwise, you must spot the terrain to watch for a change in resource quality to notice that you are in a different zone. Moons and extremely tiny planets have only one zone. Ringworlds are divided into seven zones, corresponding to the seven day/night cycle bands.

Rocks are rarely found in dense forest. Plants grow best where the soil is thick. Dense plants and thick soil obscure rocks that might lie below. Wells and mines will not be productive if rock resources are not visible on the ground.

Fifteen different rocks are found on the planets and rings of Hazeron.

Notes

Coal
Stone
Coal
Prevalence increases as planet size increases.
Not present in inferno zone.
Coal power plants produce electrical power by burning coal.
Coal is a component of gun powder.

Crystal
Stone
Crystals
Found on all worlds in varying amounts.
Crystals are used in the manufacture of electronics and jewelry.

Eludium Shards
Stone
Eludium
Prevalence reduced by atmosphere density.
Atmosphere must be less than 15% density to find it at all.
Abundant on worlds in vacuum, eludium shards may also be found on worlds with only trace atmospheres.

Gems
Stone
Gems
Found on all worlds in varying amounts. Gems are used in the finest jewelry.
Picture Not Available Hyperbolite Stone
Bolite
Prevalence increases as planet size increases.
Only present in frigid zone.
Not present on moons.
Hyperbolite is a rare Bose-Einstein Condensate that forms naturally in the extreme cold of frigid worlds. A vigorous reaction occurs with the application of even the tiniest bit of energy.

Ice
Ice
Found on snow-capped peaks and polar regions.
Not present in inferno zone.
Ice is found on polar caps and snow capped alpine peaks.
A water treatment plant is needed to convert ice to water.

Lumenite
Stone
Lumenite
Prevalence increases as orbit zone increases away from the sun.
Prevalence is reduced as planet size increases.
Lumenite is needed to manufacture starship wormhole drives.
Lumenite glows bright blue in the dark.

Minerals
Stone
Minerals
Found on all worlds in varying amounts. Minerals are used in the manufacture of electronics, pharmaceuticals, and other products.

Oil Shale
Stone
Oil
Natural Gas
Prevalence increases as planet size increases.
Not present in inferno zone.
Oil shale indicates the presense of hydrocarbon resources.
A well is needed to drill for oil and natural gas.
Oil is refined into gasoline for fuel or petrochemicals, which are used in the production of pharmaceuticals and plastic.
Natural gas power plants produce electricity by burning natural gas.

Ore
Stone
Ore
Found on all worlds in varying amounts. Ore is converted to metal by smelters.
Metal is essential to conduct electricity.
Many products are made using metal including tools, vehicles, and spacecraft hulls.
Picture Not Available Phlogiston Vent
Stone
Phlogiston
Prevalence increases as planet size increases.
Only present in inferno zone.
Raw phlogiston vents from seams in the crust of inferno worlds. A well is needed to drill for phlogiston.
Picture Not Available Polytarpit
Stone
Polytaride Gas
Prevalence increases as planet size increases.
Only present in frigid zone.
Polytarpits form where frozen polytaride gas oozes to the surface of frigid worlds. A well is needed to pump polytaride gas from these deposits.

Radioactives
Stone
Radioactives
Found on all worlds in varying amounts. Nuclear power plants produce electrical power using radioactives.
Radioactives glow dim green in the dark.

Stone
Stone
Found on all worlds in varying amounts. Stone is a construction material that is available most everywhere.
Carpenters make simple tools out of stone.
Picture Not Available Vulcanite
Stone
Vulcanite
Prevalence increases as planet size increases.
Only present in inferno zone.
Not present on moons.
Vulcanite is forged at the core of inferno worlds and ejected to the surface through vulcanism, This rare but malleable ore can be smelted into Vulcium, the strongest and lightest metal known to exist.
