Cron (Version
1.8) is an event scheduler for Windows modeled after the Unix
utility of the same name. Using a powerful scheduling system, Cron
is able to trigger specified events at regular intervals.
Events
can consist of up to three components each, in any combination:
- A
program to execute (BAT, EXE, COM, or PIF file formats
supported)
- A sound
(WAV) file to play
- A text
message to display
Cron is
a very small and efficient program, exerting a minimal load on
the operating system, making it a very popular alternative to
larger "scheduling" applications. Due to the nature of
event-triggering programs, they must be loaded at all times to in
order to function. Cron takes such a small amount of
system resources that it uses very little memory and computing
cycles to operate, compared to other bloated event schedulers
that load a tremendous amount of unnecessary programs to do
similar actions.

These two downloads include the same files. The only
difference is in the installation used. There are currently
no 32-bit, Windows 95/NT-specific versions of Cron. Version
1.8 will operate effectively under any of these operating
systems.
For Windows
3.x users, we are providing a separate download of this
program. This is a self-extracting ZIP file that you can just
download into a directory of your choice (you should create a
'Cron' directory) and run. This will extract all of the necessary
files into that directory. Once extracted, simply double-click
the file 'cron.exe' from this directory and Cron will run. You
may want to create an icon shortcut to Cron in a Windows Group,
as well as placing it in your Startup Group if you want to have
Cron run every time you start Windows.
